Hypothyroid

Foods to Avoid When Suffering from Hypothyroid

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped small gland placed near the base of the neck which makes and stores the thyroid hormone. Thyroid gland works through the TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) which prompts the release of thyroid hormone in the bloodstream, an absence of such release is termed as Primary Hypothyroidism. These hormones are very important as they help in controlling the growth, repair and metabolism.

When the gland is unable to produce enough thyroid hormone (TH) – it causes increased weight, depressed mood, slow work speed, and increased sensitivity to cold. Vice versa an overactive thyroid results in weight loss, irregular heartbeat, nervousness, sweating and irritability.

Genetic makeup, autoimmune situation, stressed condition and environmental toxins can cause harm to the thyroid and so is the diet – the only factor that can be controlled.

Nutrients that can harm

Two nutrients that might harm the thyroid include Goitrogens and Gluten. Goitrogens might interfere in the normal functioning of the thyroid on the other hand hypothyroidism might result in celiac disease.

Goitrogens: The name is derived from the term “goitre”, which is the enlarged thyroid gland. Goitrogens are substances that disrupt the production of thyroid hormones by interfering with iodine uptake in the thyroid gland and can lead to goitre. Foods that have goitrogenic effects include Cassava (when crushed and not detoxified by soaking, all Brassica family vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, turnip and cabbage and all other cruciferous vegetables.

Gluten: Grains like wheat, barley and rye consist of a protein called gluten. People with celiac disease can not eat gluten, their body gets attacked and the gut area is damaged.
