Future of Healthcare: Personalized, Predictive, Preventive & Participatory

The smart people of Silicon Valley are talking about the 4 Ps of healthcare – Personalized, Predictive, Preventive & Participatory. And it is interesting to note that the Pill is not one of the Ps.

In the old way of medicine, Doctor is the central figure, when the health issues were mainly around accidents and infections. While in the new way of medicine, because the diseases are lifestyle-driven, Patient is the most important. We need to educate the people that you can’t out medicate a lifestyle-related chronic disease. If you want to get into the root cause, you have to participate.

James Maskell gave an example of Type 2 Diabetes using the 4 Ps approach. In western medicine we give the same pill or medicine to everyone who has type 2 diabetes but to actually make an impact, we need to check if they have diabetes due to the wrong lifestyle? Toxic consumption of air, water, or any other factor. We can only achieve this if we develop a participatory relationship. The first thing is to listen, second is to understand people’s uniqueness (body type – Vata, pitta, Kapha) then only we can go to the root cause and find out an optional solution.
