What is a plant-based diet? How does it help to maintain a healthy weight?

A growing number of the population has been choosing to reduce or eliminate the animal products in their diet. As a result, a number of plant-based diets have become popular these days. Plant-based or plant-forward eating diets focus on foods obtained primarily from plants that include not only fruits and vegetables, but also nuts, seeds, oils, whole grains, legumes, and beans. It excludes refined foods such as added sugars, white flour, and processed oils.

What is the Right Plant-Based Diet!

It is not necessary to go full vegetarian or vegan (avoiding all animal products, even eggs, and dairy) to get the best health benefits of plant-based diets. The focus should be on eating more of the right plants, eliminating unhealthy foods, and moderating your intake of healthier animal products. Plants have essential nutrients that we cannot get from other foods. If embracing a fully plant-based diet feels frightening, then begin with a small change. Making small changes in your diets, such as reducing the animal food intake by one to two servings per day and replacing it with whole grains, pulses, legumes, or nuts and seeds as your protein source, can have long term positive effects on your health.

Many health benefits can be seen by adopting a plant-based diet which are as follows:

  1. Boosts Your Immune System: A plant-based diet strengthens your immune system to protect your body against germs and microorganisms. The various nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and antioxidants present in plants help keep your cells healthy and functional and your body in balance so that your immune system can function at its best.

Reduces Inflammation: The tiny phytochemicals and antioxidants present in plants neutralizes toxins present in your body and protect the body from the free radicals that can throw the body off balance. Thus to reduce inflammation, it is important to consume plant-based options and to listen to your body’s signals for how foods work for you.

  3. Fiber-Rich: A healthy Gut: Eating a plant-based diet helps improve your gut health so you are better able to absorb the nutrients from the food that reduces inflammation and supports your immune system. Fiber also helps to lower cholesterol levels and improve bowel functioning.

  4. Eliminating Multiple Diseases: Eating a plant-based diet is not only restricted to improving immune system functioning and cancer but it also reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, mental health illness, hormonal imbalance, and weight management.

  5. Following a Plant-Based Diet Long Term, May Help You Live Longer: The diets rich in plant-based foods lowers the risk of all causes of mortality rate. “A study in the Journal of Nutrition found that eating healthy plant foods extends protection by 5 percent.”

A healthy Weight Maintenance – Plant-Based Diet 

Excessive weight can lead to hormonal imbalance and inflammation in the body thereby causing further health problems.
