5 Reasons You Should Include Psyllium Husk (Isabgol) In Your Diet

Psyllium husk is very commonly known as Isabgol which is a common household product. Psyllium grows on a small plant known as planovate. Psyllium husk is an important part of Ayurveda. It is mainly cultivated in North India and requires cool and dry temperatures. It is used as dietary fibre and helps to relieve constipation, mild diarrhoea, and sometimes used as thickening agent in food industries.

The main reason for the cultivation of psyllium is for its mucilage, a clear gelling agent, which is extracted from its seed coat. After milling mucilage is derived from outer layer of seeds. This mucilage is often called psyllium husk.

1 tablespoon Psyllium gives 20 kcal energy along with 10 mg sodium and 0.2 grams protein.

Several Health Benefits Of Isabgol

As already discussed it is beneficial for constipation, diarrhoea, high blood cholesterol, type -2 diabetes mellitus and weight loss. Let’s lead toward how it provides relief.

Constipation: Psyllium husk is basically a dietary fibre which is not absorbed by the small intestine. Psyllium mucilage is a gelling agent which absorbs excess water and stimulates the normal bowel movement. Best terminology for Isabgol has been laxative but it is a true dietary fibre which helps in relieving symptoms of both constipation and mild diarrhoea.

High Blood Cholesterol: U.S.Food and Drug Administration accepts in 1988, the claim that if psyllium husk around 7 grams or more incorporated daily, then it would help in sufficiently reducing total cholesterol and LDL in patients with hypercholesterolemia. The trials were not large enough to confirm its effect on the disease but the available science confirms its evidence.

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: U.S. Food And Drug Administration accepts the claim in 2014, that the psyllium has a beneficial effect on the patient with diabetes. A meta-analysis test has been done which provides us with reports that psyllium before breakfast helps in improving blood glucose and hbA1C, but the vast result was seen on the patients treated with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Weight Loss: Isabgol accelerates weight loss as it is enriched with soluble and insoluble fibre which not only cleans the colon but also supports the gastrointestinal tract. As it is low in calories, one can take it daily for fulfilling their daily fibre intake. It also reduces hunger as it swells with water in the stomach which gives you feeling of fullness. Personalized Diet Plans, can also help in weight loss.

Food: It is a gelling agent or thickener and is commercially used in ice creams and frozen desserts. Psyllium husk can withstand the temperature ranging from 20-50 degree Celsius, with the pH of 2-10. These properties increase the use of psyllium in the food processing industry.

So, be good to your health and add psyllium as your wealth.
