Does Our Mental And Physical Health Work Together

Health can be defined in many ways, the World Health Organization defines it as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. So going by this definition we know now that for good health, both physical and mental aspects of health are equally important.

Before understanding the relationship between physical and mental health, it is important to understand the meaning of both terms.

Physical health can be understood as“being able to live comfortably and execute the things that a person wants to do”. It can also be defined as the ability of a person to carry out the daily works with ease, and also to live comfortably (without any illnesses) in one’s body’ whereas Mental health includes a range of a person’s diameter like emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It relates to our thoughts, feelings, and actions. It also helps regulate how a person handles a problem, stressful situation, or anything that seems uncomfortable.

Mental health and physical health are closely connected. Mental health plays an important role in a person’s ability to maintain good physical health. Depression and anxiety are few mental illnesses that affect people’s ability in many ways, especially to participate in anything which is related to good health. People with depression or any other mental illness often have poor physical health also, as well as poor self-perceived health, as compared to people without depression. For example, people who are in depression generally have poor eating habits and are mostly obese which further makes them more depressed. Mood and Emotions also affect the eating habits of the person, when people are too hungry or sad, they tend to overeat a lot. Additionally, unhealthy eating patterns give rise to different mood swings. Fluctuations in the blood sugar levels and nutritional imbalances in the body are often to blame. In fact, many people tend to overeat to fill time simply because they’re bored and do not have anything interesting to do or look forward to. Also, most of the people who are bored tend to park themselves in front of the TV which further inevitably leads to snacking.

On the other hand, physical health is also directly related to Mental Health because good physical health leaves a better personal feeling in the long run. Physical activity boosts mental wellness. Regular physical exercise can relieve stress, tension, anxiety, depression, anger, and other mood swings. For example, a person feels good personal feeling after following the physical activity regime as it also helps increase their self-esteem, and most people also notice an improvement in general well-being over time as physical activity becomes a part of daily chores.

Patients undergoing both depression and physical health problems are a major risk. The physical health problem can complicate the assessment and treatment of depression by hiding or imitating its symptoms. It could work the other way also. People with any prevailing physical health disease may tend to feel more psychological distress than healthy people may do. Poor physical health brings an increased risk of poor mental health, as do the social and relationship problems that are very common among chronically ill patients.
