Honey, the liquid gold is very well known for its health benefits. But do know you that it is equally good for your skin and hair? Honey is a highly hydrating liquid which is full of antioxidants. It has antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties which make it suitable to be used for various skin and hair ailments.
If you’re looking for easy ways to incorporate it into your beauty regime, then here are a few tips.
Benefits of Honey for Skin
Honey when applied on the face and kept for 30 mins before washing the face with normal water, captivates the dust, dirt, grime and other impurities from the pores of the skin, thereby acting as a good cleansing agent. Due to its antiseptic qualities, it also helps in soothing and healing the skin.
Regular application of honey on the affected area helps in fading the acne scars. Honey has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that help lighten scars and gives the skin a healing effect itself. Honey, when mixed and massaged with nourishing coconut or olive oil, helps to increase blood circulation, boost skin recovery and calm irritated skin. Mix honey and coconut or olive oil in a 1:1 ratio (one teaspoon of each) and massage it in circular motions on your face to get the maximum benefit.
Delays Skin Ageing
The moisturizing quality of honey helps in soothing dry, sensitive and irritated skin and thus, helps in reducing wrinkles and delays skin ageing. The hydrating effect of honey also helps in keeping the skin soft and smooth.
A combination of honey and aloe vera gel in a ratio of 1:2 ratio, i.e. 1 tsp honey and 2 tsp aloevera, works well to help sunburned or sun-damaged skin. Both honey and aloevera have powerful anti-inflammatory properties to calm burnt skin and aid recovery. They are also having extremely hydrating, nourishing and cooling effects.
Softening of Chapped Lips
In case of chapped lips, apply some honey on the lips at bedtime and leave it overnight. Daily application will help in leaving the lips supple and smooth.
A combination of honey and lemon is well advised for skin cleansing. Honey is having hydrating and anti-inflammatory properties while lemon is having brightening and cleansing abilities. Mix the juice of half a lemon with one tablespoon of organic honey for cleaner, hydrated, de-tanned skin. Leave it on for 20 minutes and then wash with lukewarm water and then followed by cold water to close your pores.
Apart from this, honey is helpful in treating numerous scalp issues. A few of them include:
Promoting Hair Growth
Honey in combination with olive oil helps in strengthening the hair and thus, preventing hair loss. Mix 2 tablespoons of honey with some warm olive oil and apply on wet hair. Leave on for 15 mins and then shampoo as usual. This will not only promote hair growth but will also help in treating dry hair.
Another remedy includes using a mask of honey and eggs. The egg is a rich source of protein making hair stronger and helping it grow faster while honey provides nourishment and moisture. Mix 2 eggs with 1 cup of honey, apply this mixture from your roots to the tips and let it sit for 20 minutes before you wash it off well with shampoo.
Make a mixture of honey and water in 9:1 ratio and massage it gently on the scalp. Keep it for 3 hours and wash away. This is a very effective and helpful remedy for treating dandruff. Alternatively, a hair mask of yoghurt and honey is also beneficial. Yoghurt has citric acid which helps fight against dandruff, while honey hydrates the hair from within. For shiny hair with lesser dandruff, take 1 cup of sour yoghurt and ½ a cup of raw honey, blend it together into a smooth mixture, leave it on for 15 minutes and then wash it with a mild herbal shampoo.
Cleansing the Scalp
The cleansing action of honey is worth mentioning. Take a mixture of 3 tablespoons water and 1 tablespoon honey and massage into the scalp. Rinse well.
To maximise the benefits of honey in the above remedies it is advised to use the organic honey.
