How Vedique Diet Can Help In Managing Doshas

The vedique diet is a type of eating plan that sets guides when, how, and what you should eat based on your dosha. According to this our dosha determines which foods we should eat to maintain balance of doshas.

  • Diet for Vata Constitution: Vata (air + space). Creative, energetic, and lively. Vata dominant are usually thin with lean, underweight and may have digestive issues, fatigue, or anxiety when out of balance. The functions of vata dosha in our body includes movement, process of elimination, controlling the nervous system etc. The vata dominant people possess dry, light, cold, quick, irregular and rough qualities. So they should take food items which are smooth, heavy, warm qualities which are opposite to their own qualities. Vata people should take fresh, warm food items with sweet, sour and salty tastes. They should avoid too much fasting and excessive spicy food to regulate their digestion. Diet for vata constitution should incorporate warm drinks, sweet fruits, raw nuts, milk, butter, cream, hot cereals, etc.
  • Diet for Pitta Constitution: Pitta (fire + water) – They are usually intelligent, hard-working and decisive.  Pitta dominant have medium physical build, short temper and suffer from conditions like indigestion, heart disease,skin disorders, high blood pressure etc. Pitta dominant  persons have hot, penetrating or sharp, flowing, slightly oily and light qualities in them.So they should take food and drinks opposite to these qualities – cold, mild, dry and heavy qualities. Pitta dosha gets  accumulated in the rainy season and gets aggravated in October. Balancing and strengthening diet should be incorporated which include sweet, bitter and astringent taste. Cool foods and drinks suitable for them.Pitta dominant should take raw food and juices and should avoid coffee, alcohol, black teas, pickles, vinegar, chillies, vegetable oils, bakery products, canned foods, instant foods, hybrid grains, etc.
  • Diet for Kapha Constitution: Kapha (earth + water) -They are naturally calm, grounded, and loyal. Kapha dosha often have a healthy frame and may have health problems like weight gain, asthma, depression, diabetes etc. The functions of kapha dosha in our body includes protection, framing of structure of the body, provides immunity, holds the cells together, forms the muscle and bone, etc. The individuals with dominant kapha dosha  have slimy, cold, heavy and soft qualities. So they require diets which are opposite to their qualities. Therefore they need warm and light foods with astringent, pungent and bitter tastes. They should take low carbohydrate, low-fat diets without sugars. The people with kapha constitution should avoid frequent eating, frozen food products and cold water.

Most health problems arise due to the wrong eating habits and cooking methods. According to ayurveda from the three  upasthambhas (supports of life) :  Ahara (diet), Nidra (sleep) and Brahmacharya (observance of celibacy); the ahara has been given more importance and considered to be the best in Ayurveda.
