Prediabetes is a medical condition in which the blood sugar level is higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetic. During this stage of prediabetes, your body is having trouble maintaining blood sugar levels.
The pancreas produces insulin but body cells don’t work properly due to inflammation. This creates insulin resistance which causes an imbalance in blood sugar levels and hence, prediabetes. While insulin fights hard to control blood sugar, it is gradually losing the battle and is unable to do so effectively.
When someone is prediabetic, their blood sugar levels fluctuate between being under and over control. The instability in blood sugar levels may be harmful and cause a risk of further complications – type 2 diabetes, heart disease, liver damage, kidney damage, nerve damage, and other health problems. The long-term side effects of diabetes on your heart, blood vessels, and kidneys may have already begun with prediabetes.
“In the initial stage, prediabetes can be managed through dietary and lifestyle changes without the need for medication,” says Dr. Shikha Sharma, who envisioned The Vedique Diet Programme for diabetes and prediabetes management. Taking the required action and starting a properly nutritious diet and lifestyle changes should be considered as soon as possible to avoid further damage to multiple organs.
To manage prediabetes, the Vedique Diet Programme recommends the following changes in diet and lifestyle:
1. Eat Natural Protein
For the body to recover from diabetes-related degeneration, some enzymes are necessary which can only be obtained from proteins such as Tofu, spirulina, peanuts, chia seeds, edamame, seitan, lentils, beans, and legumes. Try to take maximum benefit from these and avoid animal-based protein to control blood sugar levels.
2. Go for a Plant-based diet
Rather than starchy vegetables, eat green and leafy vegetables (spinach, lettuce, broccoli, karela, gourd, cucumber), fruits( papaya, guava, berries, kiwi, oranges, peaches), pulses, lentils, and soya which decreases inflammation in the body and manages sugar levels.
3. Stay Hydrated
Get proper hydration because dehydration causes inflammation, one of the root causes of prediabetes and diabetes. One should drink at least 2ltrs. of in a day. Water is a natural detoxifier, it helps in throwing toxins out of the body which helps in reducing inflammation in the body.
4. Stay Physically Active
Try to incorporate any physical activity into your daily routine. It can be a brisk walk, yoga, aerobics, Zumba, or any type of sport or outdoor game to manage prediabetes. Stay active the whole day. You can even take stairs instead of elevators, walk rather than take a car if it is a short distance, such small changes will have a big positive impact on your health.
5. Take proper Sleep
Must take a sound sleep of 7-8hrs. The body needs rest to repair itself from the exhaustion it had during the day. For better functioning holistically the body recharges itself while you sleep. This helps in managing blood sugar levels.
Try to follow these changes to manage prediabetes. Even after following these, if the blood sugar is not controlled, then try to consult a certified doctor or nutritionist who can provide personalised diet and lifestyle changes for prediabetes management.
