Whole grains contain lots of fiber and non-digestible carbs like beta-glucan. These are not absorbed in the small intestine but they are digested by the large intestine. They promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the large intestine. In humans, whole grains also increase the growth of bifidobacteria, lactobacilli, and bacteroidetes.
