Tips to keep your skin & hair healthy during Holi

Holi is the coruscating festival of colors. People enjoy it with different dry colors, gulaal, and buckets full of water. Traditionally, it was celebrated with dry colors only but nowadays people use synthetic colors and the aftereffects of holi can be very detrimental. It is ruinous for the skin and hair. It causes itching or rashes to the skin, damage to hair, and irritation in eyes but also can be hazardous to the health. People go crazy and forget the care of their skin and hair. 

Here are a few tips to prevent the aftereffects and keep the skin and hair healthy:

  • Gently Rub Ice Cubes on the skin as it helps to fill the open pores of the skin.

  • Applying waterproof sunscreen prevents skin tanning and moisturizes the skin. Apply some waterproof sunscreen on the body as the constant exposure to the sun can cause tanning and leads to skin issues. 

  • Massage with Oil. Apply some coconut oil on the hair with 1-2 drops of lemon juice as it reduces the chances of infection in the scalp due to chemicals present in colors. Also, apply some almond oil on the whole body as it is a rich source of vitamin E. It nourishes the skin and acts as a protective layer between the skin and the color.

  • Bathe in lukewarm water and avoid hot water. Using hot water to remove color makes it worse and makes colors stick longer.

  • Use organic soaps and face wash. As most of the products available in the market are chemical based that further damages the skin while removing colors.

  • Apply a hair mask. After washing hair with some mild shampoo, always use a hair mask as it controls and recover damage to the hair. Use some natural hair masks like Lemon and yogurt; eggs and olive oil; banana and milk cream.

  • Use natural face packs. Apply a papaya pack where color is still present on the skin. Mix some honey, Multani mitti, and papaya to make a pack. Or apply Mint-Turmeric pack for irritated skin. Grind a cup of mint leaves and add a pinch of turmeric powder to it.

  • Clean face with rose water as it assists to reduce skin redness, soothes skin and contains antioxidants that help to recover the skin damage. An alternative for this is aloe vera gel as it also reduces the acne inflammation, removes redness, heals the skin and soothes dry or heated skin.

  • Avoid facial and bleach treatment for some time. Chemicals present in facial products can accelerate skin issues and might cause rashes and irritation.

  • Use organic and dry colors. Using organic colors during Holi will help you to prevent many skin allergies and also keep your hair healthy and shiny.

  • Stay hydrated. Drink more water as this keeps skin & hair hydrated and reduces the chance of getting cracks and rashes on the skin. Water is also known as a natural detoxifier and cleans all toxins from the body.

  • Wear full-length clothes and cover your head. Wearing full sleeves clothes and pants limits the exposure of the skin to colors and sun. Making braids and covering the hair with a scarf lessens the chances of hair damage.

  • Limit alcohol. Alcohol dehydrates the body and deprives the skin of important Vitamins and other nutrients. This in turn brittle and cracks in the skin. Opt for some lemonade, Coconut Water or any other freshly prepared fruit juice that enhances the glow of the skin.

  • Add some Citrus to the food. Adding some citrus in the food helps to smooth skin and shiny hair. Squeeze some lemon on the starter or eat an orange as Vitamin C in citrus fruits boosts collagen production for the glowing skin. It also has antifungal and antibacterial properties for healthy skin & hair.

  • Go for protein-rich food. As protein provides strength and elasticity to the skin and helps in the production of keratin. Keratin is helpful in making your hair and skin more smooth and speeds up the recovery from damage.

One should follow these tips during the festival of colors and let the skin & hair rejuvenate itself with healthy eating.
